BURCU ATABAY HACIOĞLU

Founder · Architect · Architectural Lighting Designer

Burcu Atabay Hacıoğlu is the founder and creative force behind Lighting Building.

Burcu Atabay Hacıoğlu is an architect, designer and the founder of Lighting Building, a design practice established in Istanbul in 2012.

At the intersection of architecture, interior architecture and light, the practice explores how illumination can shape the character and experience of a space. Lighting is approached not as an applied technical layer, but as an integral part of the architectural language.

Rooted in the relationship between light and darkness, the design philosophy works through contrast, shadow, materiality and controlled illumination to reveal what matters — creating depth, atmosphere and a distinct sense of place.

Under Burcu Atabay Hacıoğlu's creative direction, Lighting Building has developed a multidisciplinary practice working across Türkiye and internationally, bringing together conceptual thinking, architectural sensitivity and technical precision from the earliest stages of design through implementation.

For Burcu, good lighting is rarely about adding more light. It is about knowing where light should exist, where it should disappear, and what it should make us feel.

Designing the Darkness is the foundation of this approach.
